CRAFTED IDENTITIES

January 19–February 19, 2021 March 5, 2021 - Extended showing!

Many people explore their identity through self-expression. Concepts such as race and ethnicity connect to identities that we are given or assigned at birth, however identities related to our opinions and behaviors are often influenced by outside forces. As artists, we not only see identities within ourselves, but also within the materials and processes we use in our works. For example, characteristics of metal are completely different from ceramics, or wood, or glass.

The purpose of this exhibition is to examine, challenge, and question ideas surrounding identity. The selected artworks represent a variety of mediums and are the creations of 12 invited artists exploring how personal identities are crafted and how an artist’s craft informs their identity.

This exhibition is curated by Department of Art Visiting Assistant Professor Sophie Glenn and organized by the Department of Art Galleries with support from a Starkville Area Arts Council Community Grant.

The Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery is open Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
